National Reconciliation Week has been marked at CommBank with a traditional smoking ceremony on the steps of Commonwealth Bank Place, the bank’s head office in Darling Harbour, Sydney.

The ceremony on 29 May was opened by CommBank CEO Matt Comyn, who spoke to an audience of hundreds of employees and reaffirmed the bank’s full support of the Uluru Statement from the Heart, and its call to enshrine a First Nations Voice in the Australian constitution.

He said the focus over the coming months would be to engage with employees across the group to increase awareness and education in the lead-up to the referendum later this year, and hoped to support a respectful debate. CommBank would also take the opportunity to encourage greater discussion about its commitment to reconciliation especially through the bank’s seventh Reconciliation Action Plan, he added.

Mr Comyn then introduced performers Uncle Matt, Nathan and Tim for the Welcome to Country and the smoking ceremony.
